SG50: StarHub’s rendition of Home has a meaningful message for everyone celebrating our Golden Jubilee

As the nation gathers to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, less than 1 month away, StarHub, one of Singapore’s largest corporation, together with nine voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) have come together to spread the message of inclusivity through a heartfelt rendition of the National Day favourite Home (original version by Kit Chan). Using the medium of song, StarHub and the VWOs hope to remind Singaporeans of fellow citizens who are not as privileged, but share our love for Singapore.

I first discovered #Sg4Sg while watching Ant Man at Plaza Singapura. The trailer for Home by Homes did its job and when I got home I immediately searched online for the Music Video. When I watched the video, barely a minute into the 3.45 minutes-long clip, I couldn’t help myself but feel tears welling up in my eyes. Uh-oh…here goes! I braced myself for wet cheeks as the outstanding videography, colourful characters and facades and multitude of languages the song was sung in, even in dialect, kept me enthralled (and re-watching the video).

Sung in Singapore’s four official languages–English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil (and also non-official languages)–the arrangement of Home stars talents from Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) Senior Citizens’ Home, Boys’ Town, Breakthrough Missions, Geylang East Home for the Aged, Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home, Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, Red Cross Home for the Disabled, the Singapore Association for the Deaf and the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.

“As we reflect on the progress Singapore has achieved, this song reminds us all what ‘Home’ really means,” said Ms Jeannie Ong, Chief Strategic Partnership Officer of StarHub, who oversees StarHub’s corporate philanthropy efforts. “Home is not a place; it is made of our people and lives in our hearts. This idea of home belongs to each and every Singaporean. Hence, this year, we want to inspire Singaporeans to care, share, volunteer and donate to worthy causes, and make this SG50 a truly special celebration for the nation.”

To accompany the song recording, a full-length music video was shot over three days on-location at the various VWOs’ premises and People’s Park Complex. The music video will be shown on StarHub’s social media channels (YouTube and Facebook), StarHub TV channels and in Golden Village cinemas to amplify the reach of the song.

Madam Seow Peng Long, a resident in Geylang East Home for the Aged said, “The lyrics of Home echo how my friends and I feel towards Singapore, so when we had the chance to record our own version of the song, we were very happy to lend our voices to support this cause. We have been singing together for many years, so it was an exciting experience to actually sing on TV and do a professional recording.”

StarHub customers can support the nine VWOs which recorded the song by redeeming 50 StarHub Rewards Points for a $5 donation. The donations will come from the StarHub Sparks Fund, StarHub’s corporate philanthropy vehicle.

Ms Rowena Bhagchandani, Managing Director at DDB Group Singapore, StarHub’s advertising agency said, “Singapore is what it is today because of all its people; as diverse as they and their homes might be. There are many amongst us who may not be very privileged and might even be forgotten amidst the SG50 celebrations, yet their Singaporean pride runs as deep as our own. We want to celebrate them and their homes, and make them the stars of our celebration.”

Mr Kelvin Chen Jia Yi, a participant from the Breakthrough Missions, called this “an opportunity beyond his imagination”. He said, “I feel very blessed. Having spent so much of my life behind bars, I never thought I would get the chance to be part of the SG50 celebrations and this meaningful message.”

As part of StarHub’s SG50 celebrations, StarHub TV will be holding five weeks of free previews, culminating in six days of all-access free viewing of over 150 channels during the National Day week. StarHub will also be offering special mobile and broadband offers during this period.

I urge everyone to watch this video, and share the meaning behind it. While this rendition of Home does not feature The Sam Willows, what shines through is the occasional off-key singing by everyday Singaporeans. People that we do not always notice, but definitely a big part of our community. What stands out is the amazing videography that shows us beautiful places around Singapore, familiar and also the undiscovered.

I cannot help myself but still be moved at the 12th time watching the music video. I enjoy it very much, but most importantly I appreciate from this touching project that the people and the places are home, our Home.
